Nerve conduction studies

Nerve conduction studies and electromyography can be requested by your General Practitioner or by a Specialist. 

These tests are useful to diagnose conditions such as:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Ulnar neuropathy
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Cervical or lumbosacral radiculopathy (due to herniated discs or osteoarthritis)
  • Muscle diseases

Depending on the request from your doctor, we may perform only the nerve tests or we can have a consultation followed by the nerve test.

Preparing for the test

What to do

  • Keep your arms and legs warm, since cold limbs may affect the readings of the test;
  • Avoid applying any creams (such as moisturizers) to your arms and legs;
  • Please bring with you or wear loose clothes that can easily go above the knees and elbows. These are common test sites;

This test involves small electrical impulses and sometimes a needle assessment of some muscles. It can be uncomfortable. However, it is uncommon to have someone quit the test due to pain.
